Create an amulet shape
Make a new document, 1000×1000 pixels, white background
On a new layer, make a shape with the poligonal lasso tool, something like this:
Duplicate the layer and right click on the shape, free transform and then flip horizontal. Now moove the shape until you get a new nice shape. Here is mine:
Merge the two shape layers and repeat the steps above, but now flip the shape vertical. Now you’ll have something like this:
Merge again the two layers and repeat the steps but now you’ll have to flip the shape 90 degrees. Now this is what you’ll get:
Now add a “drop shadow”, “inner shadow”, “outer glow”, Bevel, satin, pattern overlay, whatever you like until the result will suit you.

Creating a matrix text effect
Make a new document, 500×500 pixels, black background
Now, to get a matrix text, all sorts of signs and stuff, try to open a small image with notepad. You’ll see that you’ll get all that you will need for your matrix text. Copy a portion of the text in clipboard
Now get the vertical type tool and paste your text in your document, using a green color. Your image should look like this:
Duplicate the layer and rasterize the one that is on the bottom. Now apply a Filter > Blur > gaussian blur of 1-2.
Duplicate the text layer and rasterize again the one that is under. Now apply it a mask and on the mask, with the default Black/white colors for background/foreground, apply a Filter > Render > Clouds. Your image should look like this:
Now rasterize the text layer, the one that should be on top of all the others and put it on Linear dodge mode from blending options. Now apply on it a mask and on the mask go to Filter > Render > Difference Clouds. With a small brush, paint with white on the mask
some areas you want to be more shiny. Your layer palette should look like this:

Creating a portal effect
This tutorial is not intended only for creating a portal effect, but also to teach you how to use multiple filter effect one after another.
Create a new document, 1000×1000 pixels, white background.
Go to Filter > Render > Clouds
Then use Filter > Pixelate > Mezzotint with “Long Strokes” option activated. Your image should look like this:
Now go to Filter > Blur > Radial blur and use these settings: Amount:100, Method: zoom, Quality: best. Your image should look like this:
Now use Filter > Distort > Twirl and set it to 200.
Now duplicate the layer and on the newly created layer go again to Filter > Distort > Twirl but this time apply it with a -400 value. Change the blending mode of this layer to “Lighten”. Your image should look like this:
Merge the two layers now. Go again now to Filter > Distort > Twirl and set it to 200. Now press CTRL+U or Go to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation and use any settings you like. I used Colorized, Hue: 200, Saturation: 30, Lightness: 0
